So I went to Europe recently, and I brought my solid perfume because it's less messy and easier to get through security (aka not a liquid). It worked amazingly well, and my friends kept asking about it...what was it? is that lip balm? you MADE it? how did you make it? teach me everything! And so I figured it was worth a blog post :) Plus, the best part is you get to smell like your custom favorite scent!
It's actually pretty simple to make your own solid perfume, all you really need is beeswax, coconut oil, and your choice(s) of essential oils. Then for tools, what I used was a microwave-safe mug, a microwave, an empty lip balm container, and a hole protector (more on that later).
It's actually pretty simple to make your own solid perfume, all you really need is beeswax, coconut oil, and your choice(s) of essential oils. Then for tools, what I used was a microwave-safe mug, a microwave, an empty lip balm container, and a hole protector (more on that later).
- First, I melted my beeswax to an almost liquid consistency. How much beeswax you use depends on how much perfume you're making, but I had a beeswax to coconut oil ratio of about 2 parts beeswax to 1 part coconut oil. I melted my beeswax in a microwave-safe mug and it took my small amount a few minutes to get melted. Every minute or so, I'd pull out the mug and stir the wax a little to check it and help the heat be evenly distributed. This is the longest step. I also used beeswax pellets, because I find them easiest to work with.
- Once my beeswax was nearly liquid, I added my coconut oil and microwaved it a little longer, until both oil an wax were completely melted. You don't want to excessively melt/boil your mixture, so just really keep an eye on it and customize the time to your needs.
- After it all melted, I stirred it up really well, and then added my essential oil. I personally adore lavender, it was my first EO, and I have lavender deodorant, perfume, Dr. Bronner's liquid soap, and Dr. Bronner's soap bar in lavender...it's kind of an obsession. Even my makeup has lavender EO in it.. Anyway, I added probably about 15 drops to mine.
- Once everything was added and mixed I very carefully (read: it was a complete mess where I nearly burned myself) poured my mix from my mug into an empty lip balm container. I would recommend being smarter than me and using a funnel.
- Then once that cools (and if you're impatient you can stick your container in the freezer) just roll it on to your pulse points and you have a great custom travel-friendly perfume!
- So what's up with the hole protectors? Well I also made a few other concoctions in lip balm containers (lip balm & tinted lip balm) so I needed to know which was which so I wasn't slathering my lips in lavender perfume. I stuck different colored hole protectors (like what you use to keep pages ripping in a binder) onto the lids so now I can tell them apart!
Now, a lot of DIYs like this that involve melting things will tell you to use a double-broiler. And they're right. But I don't have one and I'm a little scared to DIY one (hot boiling water and all). So I just used a mug and went for it, and this recipe turned out fine. However it does leave us with the slight problem of having wax all over what once was a perfectly usable microwavable mug. But never fear, Pinterest is here!! Check out these pins to help get candle wax out of a jar and you can use them to help you get the beeswax out of a mug!
